This early 20th century ring is absolutely electrifying: crisp, bright white diamonds with blocky old facets and prominent culets sit astride a beaming pink early synthetic ruby. While today, a synthetic origin isn't considered as valuable as natural, it's important to remember that in the early 20th century this would have been positively cutting edge technology: synthetic rubies created using Verneuil's process came to market in 1903 after over 50 years of experimentation. Early synthetic stones in jewelry were the perfect blend of technology and art, and at the time many considered them superior for their vivid colour saturation and freedom from inclusions and other imperfections. While increasingly available in the 1900s and 1910s, they particularly took off in the Art Deco period, which made striking use of synthetic rubies and sapphires in perfectly matched shades for accent stones and calibré cut decoration. This ring is beautifully crafted, thick with gold and smooth all over - a dream for everyday wear, and dare we say even a perfect alternative engagement ring?

Very good antique condition with wear in line with age and use, including a small chip on the pavilion of the ruby, and very minor evidence of past resizing. Ring has been relatively recently polished.
