Acrostic jewelry - reported to have been first introduced in 1809 by French jeweller Mellerio - swept through the Georgian and Victorian periods on a wave of popularity. In eras known for their love of symbolism and private declarations of love, the style was a perfect way to communicate your sentiments. Varying gemstones would be set in a particular order, with the first letter of each gem in turn spelling out a message - popular words included Dearest, Regard (which at the time was used with extreme fondness, so unlike today's usage), Love, and Adore.

Good antique condition with noticeable wear in line with age and use, including wear to stones and a small hole in gold at one shoulder. Please keep in mind that closed back rings should not be submerged in water and care should be taken to limit exposure to moisture.
