A beautiful old ring, this early Victorian piece balances the softness of a delicate band and daisy shape with the vivid colour play from seven bright opals. With strong flashes of blue, green, orange, and pink, the colours swirl like little galaxies in each globe-like stone. A softly scalloped gallery sits below like banner, evocative of a swooping spider's web.

The Victorians loved to imbue their jewelry with hidden meanings - from the shape of the ring, we can refer to the "language of flowers," a communication system devised to pass messages through flora, and interpret the daisy as a symbol of innocence and purity. The opals bring a little more drama with them - though they were highly prized in ancient times, they began to develop a reputation of being unlucky after a novel published in 1829, Anne of Geierstein, or, The Maiden of the Mist, featured a heroine whose bad luck came from wearing an opal that wasn't her birthstone. Further, a cursed opal ring from a scorned mistress of King Alfonso XII of Spain (reigning 1874-1885) is alleged to have felled several members of his family who each briefly owned it - though it's possible (possible!) that the rampant tuberculosis and intermarrying were more to blame. Perhaps the maker of this ring hoped to temper the power of the opal with the sweetness of the daisy?

While this ring remains in lovely condition, it's important to note that the stone settings are closed-back, so this ring should never be submerged in water and it's best to avoid getting it wet in general. Additionally, extra care should always be taken with rings with thinner bands such as this one.
