This darling antique ring features a subtle take on a buckle style, with a s-shaped sash of turquoise cutting across the otherwise simple half hoop band. The buckle motif was well loved in Georgian and Victorian jewelry, representing eternity, fidelity, and a strength of love. Used in mourning pieces, friendship tokens, and wedding bands alike, it was a versatile symbol that also allowed for all kinds of variation in style. This particular ring is crafted in the Etruscan revival style, inspired by the early to mid-1800s archaeological excavations of Pompeii that introduced the western world to the Etruscan tombs and intricate goldsmithing techniques yet unknown. The "exotic" looks captured the public's fascination and through the 1860s and 1870s in particular, jewellers tried to emulate the decorative styles, such as granulation (the application of fine beaded gold) and filigree (fine and intricate wirework), along with the use of stones popular in ancient jewellery, such as turquoise. The tightly wound twist of gold framing the stone settings pulls double duty here, looking from a distance like a beaded texture but seen up close to be wired.

Very good antique condition with wear in line with age and use.

Please keep in mind that turquoise is not compatible with hand sanitizers and alcohols, and care should be taken to avoid exposing them to any other chemicals as well, and that closed back settings like this should not be submerged in water.
