A beautiful and sentimental antique-inspired ring from the midcentury period, this glowing band is decorated all around with the rich symbolism of orange blossom flowers and ivy leaves.
While the tradition of gifting orange blossoms for a wedding reaches back to Greek and Roman mythology, naturally it was Queen Victoria who reignited the craze when she wore a wreath of orange blossoms in her wedding to Prince Albert. The flower has been said to represent fertility for its association with bearing fruit, purity for its white blossoms, and eternal love for its source on an evergreen tree.
Ivy, likewise an evergreen plant, is understandably associated with everlasting love, devotion, and friendship - feelings that stay true just as the leaves hold their colour. Further, the nature of the plant as it climbs and clings lends itself to symbolism of tight, unbreakable bonds.
Very good vintage condition with wear in line with age and use. Ring has never been sized and bears original jeweller's reference stamps for size (M) and style 441. Gold alloys are softer in higher karats, so this ring has developed some lovely wear over its lifetime with all the little scratches and dings that can't be replicated in a modern piece.
Details:
• 22k yellow gold, with full British hallmarks for Birmingham, 1967, maker's mark CG&S for Charles Green & Son
• Size 6 1/8 and cannot be resized
• Band measures 6.1mm wide and 1.2mm thick
• 5.9g
