Lively Vintage Jack-in-the-Box Charm

This mini box opens to reveal a little surprise: a wee little devil sits inside, set upon a spring so he jumps up and wiggles at you when you pop the lid! While mostly featuring clowns or jesters now, the early iterations of the startling toy nearly always featured a devil - said to have been cast away into that box (or boot). Setting jewelry features on a spring dates back to the Victorian era, when it was most commonly used on floral brooches. When the wearer moved or simply breathed, the details set "en tremblant" would quiver as though they were living things in nature and not just clever works of art.

Good vintage condition with visible wear in line with age and use, primarily in loss of most of the original enamel.
