Lockets have been around in some form or another for hundreds of years. They emerged from jewels that might be more accurately described as vessels - meant to hold perfumes or tinctures or herbs. The locket as a holder of keepsakes - portraits (photographic or earlier), hair, and the like - rose in popularity in the 19th century and has been particularly popular during wartimes ever since, as a way to hold close to you those who are physically far. This stunning piece was created in the style of "pool of light" lockets - most commonly seen with rock crystal (colorless quartz), the cabochons magnify the contents and play with light in delightful ways. This version, crafted with glass, can hold two images double sided, or even a physical token like a pressed flower or lock of hair.
Fair antique condition; most of gold plating has worn off base metal. Wear to glass. c.1890.
