Lockets have been around in some form or another for hundreds of years. They emerged from jewels that might be more accurately described as vessels - meant to hold perfumes or tinctures or herbs. The locket as a holder of keepsakes - portraits (photographic or earlier), hair, and the like - rose in popularity in the 19th century and has been particularly popular during wartimes ever since, as a way to hold close to you those who are physically far. We love that this piece can hold two images double sided, or even a physical token like a pressed flower or lock of hair. While the twin portraits of (history's most charming?) elderly couple inside can easily be removed, we'll leave that decision to you (and it's totally not our fault if you take them out and they haunt you - #couplegoals from beyond the grave).
Good antique condition with moderate wear, thread on screws are secure. Originally manufactured in the UK.
