One of our favourite features of bloodstone - a variety of polycrystalline quartz named for its unique appearance - is that no two specimens are ever exactly alike. Recognized for its deep green near-opaque field ("jasper," the quartz material) shot through with red from iron oxides, there's no wonder that for millennia its admirers have believed it to wield great power. Thought at various times to promote rapid healing (and prevent wounds), to confer strength (and even invisibility!), and to encourage creativity; these features are just as likely as its striking, dramatic beauty to be responsible for its continued popularity.
This ring has certainly been well made and well loved: the thick, heavy gold remains sturdy, but many years of wear have smoothed out the once intricate engraving to a mere suggestion. The design appears to have scalloped along the edge of the stone and had perhaps a floral or foliate pattern on the shoulders.
Good antique condition with wear in line with age and use, including loss of engraved detail.
Details:
• 15k yellow gold with British hallmarks for Birmingham 1890
• Size 7.25 and can be resized within two sizes
• One oval bloodstone approximately 11x9mm
• Face of ring measures 12.3mm wide, 9mm across, with a rise of 3.2mm; back of band measures 2.9mm wide and 1.0mm thick
• 5.2g
