Five lively opals are gypsy-set into a rosy gold band with swirling engraved details on all sides, but the most charming feature of this ring is hidden away - tucked inside, the simple inscription "Christine". This ring has been well loved over generations - some wear to the opals has softened their surface luster, but there is still considerable play of colour within the stones. The engraved pattern is crisp along the face of the ring and softened where it rubbed between the fingers, and a past sizing job lost the "e" in the engraving and the gold quality stamp, leaving a splotchy blemish in their place, but only from the inside - the outside has been smoothly maintained with just a slightly paler line of solder visible at the seam. All told, we should be so lucky to look as good as Christine at her age!

With her five graduated opals, this ring would make a lovely gift (bonus points if you're celebrating your fifth anniversary with a Christine in October!) or simply the perfect addition to your ring stack (with a barely tapered band, she'll fit right in).

• Size 5 - out of round, so hits around 4.75 on a mandrel but fits like a 5; sizing down not recommended and sizing up is possible with potential risk of losing a little more off the end of the engraving
