Lockets have been around in some form or another for hundreds of years. They emerged from jewels that might be more accurately described as vessels - meant to hold perfumes or tinctures or herbs. The locket as a holder of keepsakes - portraits (photographic or earlier), hair, and the like - rose in popularity in the 19th century and has been particularly popular during wartimes ever since, as a way to hold close to you those who are physically far. This dual-sided agate piece includes a small photo of a young boy, marked on the reverse, "3yo 1946."
Very good vintage condition with wear in line with age and use and closure is secure.
