The mano figa (figa being Italian for fig, slang for female genitalia) comes to us as a talisman from Etruscan Italy, though the sign has been used as an obscene gesture throughout cultures for nearly 8,000 years. In ancient times, the amulet was worn as an invocation of fertility and virility, particularly through its reference to femininity. Around the 17th century, the talismans began to rise in popularity in South America - particularly Peru and Brazil - and the symbol is often worn to ward off the evil eye: the gesture is so obscene that it will even distract Satan.

This Portuguese piece is made of rich 19k gold and decorated with the deepest blue enamel bracelet. Good vintage condition with soft patina.
