Impossibly sweet, this delicately rendered rose in bloom showcases the beautiful enamel work that can still be found today, inspired by antiques. In the Victorian, Edwardian, and Art Nouveau eras in particular, floral motifs often took centre stage in jewelry design: floriography, or the language of flowers, was a romantic way to send a coded message through blooms. Meaning was assigned to the colour of the blossoms as well as type, and even their arrangement and presentation - while red indicated love, passion, and courage, and roses in general span meanings from innocence to immortality depending on their colour, a single rose in bloom was taken to mean (unsurprisingly), "I love you."
